Jewelry editing is complex with respect to the photo post-processing. I make modifications on jewelry photos for the last six years. I call this service ‘for beautification’ of jewelry photos. Today I am going to useful tips for photo editing using Photoshop. Let’s dive in
First I change the background of the image. Removal of picture background is very common in the photo editing and e-commerce industry. Jewelry like rings looks better when the background is white, from my experience I can assure that. You can use the pen tool to remove backgrounds in the photo like following. First, import the image in Photoshop and select the Pen tool.
- I select a path named as ‘path1’
- Draw the clipping path around the object.
- Press the Ctrl button and select the path that we just created
- Now press Q to remove the background
The combination of color is critical to jewelry photos. I use color correction as a process which can immediately improve the quality of the photo. Here is an easy way to do say color correction for a ring image.
- At first open Photoshop. I use Photoshop regularly.
- Image > Adjustment > Color Balance
- best color combination possible for the image.
This will change your image instantly.
In my experience, the brightness setting has a great impact on any image. You can adjust the brightness easily with Photoshop. Following steps to adjust brightness
- I create a new layer on the imported image.
- Then I go to Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast.
- Adjust brightness as per need.
- Select OK to apply the changes
Removing Dust & Scratches
No matter how hard you try there will always be scratches and dust in Jewelry photos. When editing jewelry photos, I follow these techniques to get rid of dust, fingerprints and other bad sectors. There are lots of ways to do this. But I think Spot Healing Brush Tool is the best.
This tool looks outside the brushwork and automatically analyzes the shapes there. It then automatically figures out retouching colors and values for the photo. Another tool I use regularly is patch tool. By this, you can replace one area of a photo with other section from the photo. It’s very handy.
Adding Natural Shadow:
Unwanted shadows sometimes ruin a photograph. Producing a natural shadow based on the rings position will make the jewelry realistic. I use this technique all the item to increase the visibility and acceptance of the jewelry. After all, the main purpose of the jewelry photo is to relate to the customer. This adds depth to subject
In conclusion, jewelry photo retouching is a part when working as a professional photo retoucher. This because of the growing demand from the growing jewelry industry and e-commerce needs. Sharing my technique, I hope it will help you to be a competitive retoucher.
